Spirit of Discovery is a 58,250 ton cruise ship delivered to Saga on 24 June 2019 .She is Saga Cruises' first ever new-build ship and the largest ship to ever sail for Saga. She has capacity for 999 passengers and 523 crew. Here she is as I photographed her in Bermuda. The sister ship Spirit of Adventure comes into service this year.

Its certainly very modern with the very latest technology and a visit to bridge was more like the Starship Enterprise than the old traditional ship controls with joysticks, no charts and GPS tracking and mapping. The engines are amazing being electric motors in pods that rotate 360 degrees. The propellers actually pull the ship along rather than push like a traditional ship. Here is a graphic of the Siemens system used on the ship.

The ships are designed to offer what Saga called Luxury Boutique sailing and certainly it has the very best in fittings and design. All the cabins have a balcony and there are a huge number of single cabins. For couples there are Standard , Deluxe and Suites. We would normally have a Standard cabin but were upgraded this time to a Deluxe cabin which had more space and a walk in wardrobe.

Here is our cabin before we "occupied " and filled it with our stuff!

The Atrium The Main Dining Room

The Grill for Breakfast and Lunch

The ship has a library, craft room, IT area, theatre, two main dining rooms and three specialty dining rooms, spa, fitness studio, pools, numerous bars and a promenade deck ( 4 laps to the mile!)

Well that is all from us on this particular trip - we hope you have enjoyed sharing it with us and thank you all for the wonderful comments. We haven't been able to respond because of a peculiar glitch in the web site combined with Saga internet problems. The posts have not been on time because a large proportion of the time I and to some extent Penny have had a terrible cough and the bug has gone round the ship. Its meant a lot of sleeping and doing nothing much but what are holidays for anyway. I know our granddaughter Sophie has been following the ship on a tracker app so for her benefit we are here:-

We are back on the ship in July for a cruise to Greenland and we have now cancelled the World cruise ( which we do not think Saga will run) and booked a cruise around South America in 2021 instead.
